 The Editing Process

Request an Estimate

To provide you with a cost estimate for your project, please provide the following:

  • The length of the project (e.g., word count).
  • When you require the work returned to you.
  • What kind of editing you need.
  • For larger documents (e.g., thesis, professional report, manuscript), please submit a small sample (5 – 10 pages) of the work to be edited.

After you submit a request for an estimate, you will be sent an email confirming receipt of the request, as well as identifying any additional information needed to complete the estimate.

Estimate and Service Agreement

The estimate that you receive will outline the key details of the editing project. This includes the scope and duration of the project as well as the estimated cost, which is based upon the details you have provided.

If you are satisfied with the estimate, you will then be asked to submit your entire document so that the document details (e.g., word count) can be confirmed for the creation of a quote and a service agreement.

Before work commences, the service agreement needs to be signed and a deposit needs to be made (as outlined in the quote and service agreement).

The Review Process

To facilitate the virtual exchange of information, the ‘track changes’ feature of Microsoft Word is used so that clients can see all changes made to the text, with editor comments visible in the margin of the document.  However, if you would prefer edits and comments to be made by hand or in a different format, please discuss this before work commences.

As a general rule, Marianne will correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors.  She will also improve the flow of your paper, eliminate any awkward sentences or phrasing, and ensure that the writing is clear and concise while meeting your specific formatting requirements. Comments will be left for the client in order to provide further guidance and insight.

During the review process, if anything arises that significantly alters the agreed to terms, the client will be notified immediately, and work will recommence as soon as the issue is resolved (this may require a modification to the original service agreement).

When the review process is completed, you will be notified by email, which will include the final invoice.  Your document will be returned to you upon receipt of the final payment.

Clients interested in retaining Wise Owl Wordsmithing on an ongoing basis for regular small projects, such as memos, newsletters, web content, etc., please contact Marianne directly to discuss a contract and invoicing options that meet your needs.

Rates and Payment

The rate for editing services is based on project length, time-frame for return, and the level of assistance required.  Generally, the longer the time-frame for return, the lower the quote.

Every client is given the fairest rate possible for their particular editing needs.

Student discounts available.

Preference is for clients to make payment through PayPal or e-transfer. Please discuss any alternative methods of payment before work begins.

Completed work will not be released until final payment is received or specific arrangements have been made.

Confidentiality

Wise Owl Wordsmithing respects the confidentiality of research, business/organizational information, and original creative work.  Client work and personal information (name, address, email, number, etc.) will never be made available to a third party without the written authorization of the client.  Upon request, a confidentiality agreement can be signed before you submit your work.
